Keeping up-to-date with all that mowing, watering and weeding is a mammoth job which eats away at precious free time during the summer months.

We are a nation of animal lovers. This fact was borne out when it came to voting for our second Proud to be Local winner last month. And now £500 of funding has been handed to Holbrook Animal Rescue following hundreds of votes from the public to recognise the work that the charity does for stray dogs and cats.

We’re proud to play a small part in helping this amazing charity care for abandoned animals in our local neighbourhood. The centre’s aim is to offer the veterinary care needed before finding the dogs and cats a loving home where they can live out the rest of their lives in comfort.

This was the second chance for local causes to receive £500 of funding from us, as part of our year-long Proud to be Local campaign which will champion a total of four good causes. Each time we call for nominations we’re touched and astonished by the scope of charitable work that happens on our doorstep. This is our way of helping to shine a spotlight on a handful of those worthy causes.

Many of us are feeling the effects of the longest heatwave to hit the country since 1976. Weeks of glorious sunshine and record temperatures make a welcome change to the usual English summer, however the weather is starting to take its toll on our gardens and green spaces.

There’s no doubt that a hosepipe ban could be on its way in Surrey and Sussex. On 5th August, people in the North West of England will be the first to be affected. Those caught using hosepipes or sprinklers in their gardens could face a hefty fine. And it’s likely that the South of England will soon follow suit.

If you’ve been desperately trying to keep your plants and lawn watered with a sprinkler, you’re probably dreading the prospect of a hosepipe ban. At D.W. Nye we’ve been helping our customers to create garden that stay green all-year round.

Following our call for nominations for a charity that deserves a boost, we’re delighted to announce the names of the three good causes that have made it onto our shortlist.

It’s now down to you to cast your vote for your favourite. In the second round of our Proud to be Local campaign this year, we’re giving away another £500 to the winning charity or community group.

You have until midnight on Sunday 17th June to cast your vote and affect the outcome, and voting couldn’t be easier. You can either: visit our depot in Kingsfold and post a token in the voting box; click your chosen group on the poll at the top of our Facebook page; or email [email protected] and put the name of the group in the subject line. Duplicate votes from the same email account will not be counted.

We’ll then have the lovely task of contacting the winning charity on Friday 29th June to arrange a convenient time to deliver the cheque.
